Your roadmap to great skin....

Whether you are ready to fight aging every step of the way or you want to age gracefully, a little selfcare goes a long way in helping you look your best as you age.  We get questions every day from clients, “What is the best skincare”, Do I need Botox”, “What is the best thing for sagging”.  I find that a lot of clients that are eager to get Botox or filler treatments but are sometimes missing some of the basics of great skincare.  Conversely, some clients are very committed to great creams, but are reluctant to try more advanced antiaging procedures.

As we age, strength and elasticity are lost as collagen and elastin production decreases, cumulative exposure to sun and hormones damages melanocytes, and facial fat and bone volume loss occurs.  The result is thinner skin, dark spots, wrinkling and sagging.  A comprehensive approach is a must to really address each of these issues.

Let’s break it down.  Here’s an overview of what’s out there.  Think of this as your roadmap to great skin and a youthful look at any age.

  1. Wash your Face!!

Most all of us are familiar with Rachel Hollis’ book Girl Wash Your Face.  Not to be too cliché, but this truly is the first step to skincare.  Leaving makeup on overnight has a myriad of negative effects on your skin including clogging your pores, causing breakouts and accelerating the aging process.

  1. Give your skin the good stuff

Did you know that there is a difference in Medical Grade skincare and what you can get over the counter or what your friend is selling.  The ingredients are proven, studied, stronger and more effective.  They are held to the same standard that all medications are and have to be prescribed and distributed by a medical facility.  Our favorite lines are Obagi and Skin Medica but there are several great lines to choose from.  More important than the brand are the ingredients.

Here are a few key ingredients to look for:

Alpha hydroxy acid and beta hydroxy acid- These products penetrate the epidermis improving collagen production, exfoliating dead skin cells and decreasing excess oil on the skin.

Vitamin C- Think of Vitamin C and your skin’s defense system.  It is a potent antioxidant and fights free radicals and environmental damage to your skin AND it triggers healing by accelerating the production of collagen and elastin.

Hydroquinone- this topical skin lightening cream helps with hyperpigmented/brown spots on the skin caused by sun damage, acne scars, pregnancy, and hormones such as birth control.

Retin-A- This the ONLY FDA approved topical treatment for wrinkles.  It is widely considered a must have for antiaging.  It is medical grade and cannot be obtained over the counter. It causes skin cells to turn over more rapidly so we see fresh healthy skin cells AND it boost collagen.

Sunscreen- A must.  No questions asked. Yes, everyday.  Yes, even if you are mostly inside.  And make sure you choose a great one that protects you from UVA and UVB rays.  Our favorite is Skin Medica’s total defense and repair.  In addition to UVA and UVB protection, you also get an antiaging effect as well as heat damage protection.

Plasma- We incorporate plasma into many of our services.  It’s the bodies very own little miracle cure.  The primary purpose of plasma is to transport nutrients, hormones and proteins to the parts of the body that need it.  This has exciting aesthetic applications including faster healing times, healthier skin cells and even hair stimulation and growth.  The best part, it’s all natural!

  1. Tighten Up!

You’ve heard a lot of talk about collagen and elastin.  Collagen gives your skin strength, elastin allows it to stretch.  As we lose strength and stretch capacity, we sag, we wrinkle, and we lose that youthful appearance.  While some of the products above do aid in building the skins strength and stretch, their effects are admittedly marginal.  Services like Microneedling and Radiofrequency are a fantastic and natural options for boosting the collagen and elastin in the skin.  We offer Secret RF which is a revolutionary technology that combines microneedling, radiofrequency and plasma for the triple threat against aging.  We find that for our 30 and 40 somethings, there are amazing preventative effects with these procedures and for our mid 40s and beyond, Secret RF can truly be corrective AND preventative; tightening around the eyes, neck and jawline.

  1. BOTOX!

Hands down, this is our busiest and quite possibly best service.  Approved in 1989,  Botox has years of use and safety. Over 1.5 million Botox injections were carried out in the US last year alone.  So, what does Botox do?  It blocks the muscles ability to contract.  In experienced hands, Botox is placed in very specific doses to very specific muscles in the face for a dramatic improvement in lines and wrinkles of expression.  You might be asking yourself, “Do I need Botox?”  We always say need is a relative term in aesthetics but if you have wrinkles that are beginning to bother you when you look in the mirror, Botox is a very effective and easy choice.  Most treatments are 10-15 minutes start to finish.

  1. Build a firm foundation

Remember that fat and bone volume loss that we talked about?  There is no way around it, it is part of the aging process and begins as early as our late 20’s.  Fillers provide the structure.  Think of the skin as the table cloth and the bone and fat under your skin as the table.  If your table is collapsed, the table cloth cannot look it’s best.  If your table is strong but your tablecloth is stretched and sagging, the tablecloth cannot look it’s best.  It takes both to truly address aging.  Dermal Fillers are used to augment areas such as lips, cheeks and jawlines as well as providing structure and correcting the effects of aging by lifting cheeks and filling deeper hollows, wrinkles and folds.  Done well, they are very natural appearing and really do bring the youth back to your face.

Every individual has different goals, different needs and different comfort levels.  Each service that we offer works together with the next to address aging.  It’s not enough to just get an occasional facial, just get Botox, or to simply buy the latest eye cream.  Greta skin is achievable at any age, goal or budget.  It can a bit of a commitment, but one with such an amazing payoff.
