COVID-19 Update
We are currently closed through the month of April with a projected reopening date of May 4th. We are in the office daily from 9-1 taking calls and emails.

Let's talk LIPS!!!! 10 things you need to know before you get Lip Filler...

1.  Know you injector.  Do your research.  If their social media page is filled with HUGE lips and you want HUGE lips then they are most likely your place.  If they take a more conservative approach and that feels more like you, that may be a better fit.  Ask about their injecting experience.  Ask what age clients they usually treat.  Ask to see before and afters.  Ask how many lips they treat on a regular basis.  Some injectors really specialize in augmenting lips in a younger demographic while others do more corrective work on lips that are losing volume and showing signs of aging.

2.  Do your homework.  There's a lot to consider.  In addition to choosing your injector....how big do you want your lips?  What product do you want to use?  Product selection should be done in collaboration with your injector but here are some things to consider:

Ultra- Indicated for lips, may lasts up to 12 months, gives a nice balanced, beautiful but conservative lip

Ultraplus- Widely used in lips (although not indicated), may lasts beyond 12 months, gives a more robust result

Volbella- Indicated for lips, may lasts up to 12 months, the softest product for lips, great if you are wanting a very conservative lip or if you have lip lines (smoker lines)

Vollure- Lasts up to 18 months, gives a nice balanced, beautiful but conservative lip

3.  Bring pictures of what you like.  This will give your injector an idea of the size and shape you have in mind.

4.  With that being said.....know that to some degree we are bound by YOUR lips. The size and shape of your natural lip does impact the final result.  If you have smaller lips and want to move up considerably in size, that is best accomplished over multiple sessions.

5.  Size matters...and is such a personal choice.  I usually ask the question, "Are you okay if you walk in a room and everyone KNOWS that you had your lips filled?" If the answer is no, then we would choose a more conservative product.  If the answer is yes, then Juvederm Ultraplus is probably the right choice for you.  Err on the side of being conservative.  It's much easier to add more than to take filler out.

6. Hyaluronic acid based fillers are reversible.  The goal is to never have to reverse a treatment, but take comfort in knowing that as long you you use a hyaluronic based filler, you can completely reverse the result.  It's costly, and can be uncomfortable, however it can be done.

7.  In preparation.  If you've chosen your injector, you're ready to prepare for your visit.  Avoid aspirin or Ibuprofen type products for 1 week prior to your visit as well as fish oil, multivitamins or vitamin E. Each of these vitamins and medications will thin your blood and can increase your risk for bruising. This is why it’s also best to avoid alcohol or caffeine 24-hours before and after your appointment as this will help reduce swelling. Many clients take Arnica tablets – a homeopathic herb that helps reduce bruising – pre and post-appointment.

8.  Know the risks.  As lip fillers are often referred to as a "lunchtime procedure", people assume it’s completely risk-free.  We discussed bruising which I would consider the most common adverse effect.  This is very short term and is well worth a few short days of bruising to enjoy beautiful lips for a year or more.  Slight tenderness and a small amount of swelling are to be expected.  Infection is possible although extremely rare.  If you’re prone to cold sores, having lip filler could trigger one, so it’s best to take cold sore medication three days before your treatment.

9.  Here's what you can expect during your treatment....  Make sure you arrive at your appointment makeup free.  Your injector should review options for keeping you comfortable during your treatment as well as options for which dermal filler to use.  Options include numbing cream, a vibration device as well as numbing injections and ice. The treatment is quick and should be well tolerated although there is some discomfort.  The cost of lip filler varies.  In our practice you can expect to pay between $625 and $750 depending on your product selection.

10.  Here's what you can expect after.... RESULTS are immediate and we LOVE that.  However, there may be some bruising or swelling after your treatment. Icing the day of your treatment is advised to minimize these risks.  Most clients are slightly swollen and have some tenderness the day after treatment and may even feel nervous that their lips are a bit too big.  Within a few days, the swelling settles and your true result can be enjoyed.

11.  At our office we schedule and two week follow up appointment to make sure you are loving your results.  At this appointment we can use any remaining filler if the full syringe was not used.  As always, it is greatly appreciated and encouraged to refer friends and family so they can join in on the fun of addressing their "problem areas".
