Leaky Gut Syndrome

Leaky gut syndrome (often referred to as intestinal hyperpermeability in medical literature) is a digestive condition that affects the lining of the intestines. It occurs when there is damage to this lining. The intestines are typically protected by a single layer of specialized epithelial cells that are linked together by tight junction proteins. These tight junctions act as the gateway between your intestines and your bloodstream, controlling what is allowed to pass into the bloodstream from your digestive system. In leaky gut syndrome, gaps in these tight junctions form and allow bacteria and other toxins to pass into the bloodstream. The result is an abnormal immune response triggering inflammation that, if left untreated, could lead to numerous symptoms and even disease.

Symptoms of Leaky Gut
Fatigue
Chronic diarrhea, constipation or bloating
Difficulty concentrating
Widespread inflammation
Skin rashes such as acne, eczema or psoriasis
Joint pain
Thyroid problems
Autoimmune diseases
Food Sensitivities
Headaches
Mood issues

Researchers have found significant evidence to support the existence of leaky gut. Research also indicates that leaky gut may contribute to a range of health conditions. Failure to achieve and/or maintain a healthy intestinal barrier usually has negative consequences for both intestinal and systemic health. Several conditions or diseases have been linked to Leaky Gut Syndrome. Some of which include:

+ Obesity
+ Diabetes
+ Irritable Bowel Syndrome
+ Thyroid disorders
+ Allergies
+ Respiratory Infections
+ Inflammation – both acute and chronic
+ Skin conditions
+ Autoimmune Diseases
+ Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
