Causes of Leaky Gut Syndrome

Bacterial imbalance - The intestines are also home to a wide range of bacteria called gut microbiota. These bacteria aid digestion, protect the intestinal wall and support normal immune function. Leaky Gut Syndrome may involve imbalances in gut microbiota. Imbalances in the gut microbiota can trigger the body’s immune response. This results in gut inflammation and increased intestinal permeability (IP). IP describes how easily substances can leak out of the intestines and into the bloodstream.

Poor Diet - The Western style diet, which is characterized by a high amount of fat and carbohydrates and low in fiber, leads to increased intestinal permeability.

Vitamin Deficiencies – Low levels of Vitamins A and D in particular are associated with increased IP.

Other common causes of leaky gut include chronic stress, yeast overgrowth in the small intestine, alcohol consumption, frequent antibiotic use, exposure to toxins, infections and autoimmune diseases.

So how do you know if you have Leaky Gut Syndrome? If you have any of the symptoms listed above, chances are you have intestinal hyperpermeability. Having said that, we recommend some gut health testing. While there are several tests to check for leaky gut, we often use an IgG Food Sensitivity with Candida test. People with leaky gut often have numerous food sensitivities as well as Candida (yeast) overgrowth, which is a common underlying cause.
